We are both Ohio State alumni who were living in New Orleans, Louisiana
independently of each other. Moreover, we had gone to the Mid City Yacht Club, the
alumni bar in New Orleans to watch the Ohio State vs. Virginia Tech football
game on September 6, 2014. Sadly, we were losing (the only loss that season!) and
found company in each other during that miserable game!
We were both excited to meet someone who was as affected by an Ohio State
win/loss as the other one was!
Sam knew she was in love pretty much instantly. However, it took Stephen considerably
longer, haha. He says he knew when we first moved in together. We had this
really tiny and crappy one bedroom apartment that we moved both of our
completely full apartments into and we somehow made it work, both with the
space and our relationship.
The weekend was a whirlwind of activities. First things first, on Friday we did a taco night with
our 6 closest friends at one of their homes. On Saturday we went deep sea
fishing with two of our friends in the Gulf of Mexico. And, on the way home, we
were offered suite tickets to a New Orleans Pelicans game. Eventually, after the game,
Stephen started walking with our friend, Danielle, and told her he was going to
propose to me, but she needed to get me to the lake. Lake Pontchartrain is one
of our favorite places to bring family and friends who came to see us. Sam
always joked with Stephen that is was such a romantic place with the boardwalk and everything, but he never brought her there, he only went when we had friends in town. So Danielle convinced Sam (rather guiltily) that we
had to go to the lake to meet up with another friend. So, when we got to the lake,
Stephen asked Danielle to take a picture, which she acted like she was doing
(when actually having the video open) and got a video of the proposal.
A colorful and rustic wedding filled with personalized touches and a little New
Burgundy, Navy and Gold
Stephen gave Sam his right hand during the ceremony when the priest was in
the middle of the ring exchange. Also, had to remind Stephen “left hand” quietly
so we could continue. (Picture of this moment included!).
Another thing, Sam surprised Stephen with a cathedral length veil for the walk down the
aisle. Truth be told, Stephen wasn’t incredibly happy that we did a first look (he wanted to be
surprised) and Sam HATES veils, so she wanted to give him a surprise!
Also, we celebrated an Usher’s birthday at midnight at the bar next door!
Another thing was that each table had a “name” instead of a number, and the names were streets in
Our first look was definitely Sam’s favorite part. Her dress was 100% different
than what Stephen was expecting. So, she was so excited when she finally got
to see him and show him! But Stephen’s favorite part was the trolley ride around the city after the ceremony
before the reception. Also, spending time with our best friends, drinking and
without any actual worries.
Sam loved planning everything! Because Sam is an incredibly organized and creative
person, and this wedding was her chance to plan the heck out of something
exactly the way she wanted!
