I am so happy to share this NYE wedding with you guys! They ended up getting 5 inches of snow after the wedding started and it made the entire night stunning! The proof is in the pictures below; enjoy!
Katelyn Nolan, 28, Registered Nurse on a Neuroscience Unit, Sun Prairie, WI
Joshua Ernst, 29, Registered Nurse on a Neuroscience Unit, Sun Prairie, WI
Joshua and I both went to the same nursing school at UW-Madison. We had different friend groups, but it easy to notice one of the few males in the program. It wasn’t until we both started working on the same unit during nursing school that we started talking as friends. Later I would find out he would joke with his friends saying, “If that Kate Nolan was ever single, I would date her.”
Fast forward a year after graduation, we went on a Brewer game with coworkers, and Josh kept making subtle hints towards me that he was interested. Over the course of the next six months (yes, SIX!), he would ask me out on dates and I would politely decline. To say I was nervous about dating a coworker was an understatement. Finally, I decided it was better to go on a date and see what would happen than never knowing. We went on our first date over three years ago and it was the best decision I ever made!
I remember coming out of my interview of the unit that we both currently work on and seeing Josh come out of a patient’s room. I think my heart skipped a beat. I always thought he was handsome seeing him in nursing school. He would often be found playing the piano in between classes in the common area. Who doesn’t like a man playing the piano?! He always had this confidence about him which I thought was really attractive.
I still remember the day in nursing school when I was talking to the other male nurses in our program… I remember telling them that if Kate was ever single, I was going to ask her out on a date. Well after doing this 6 times, she finally said yes. What really attracted me to Kate was her simple beauty combined with the utmost kindness. She is always thinking of others before herself. She lights up every room she enters and continues to surprise me each and every day. Most of all, she always thinks of little things to make me happy. She has done this ever since I have met her and I have know doubt she always will.
I think it’s hard for me to pinpoint an exact moment, but if I had to pick a moment that I will remember forever was when we went to Nashville for our second trip together as a couple walking around Cheekwood Botanical Gardens. Anyone that knows me, knows that I love to travel and take pictures. Josh was incredibly patient with me walking around the gardens and letting me enjoy the moment. There are not many people that would be so willing to spend the afternoon wandering with me. I remember we were holding one another in each other’s arms on a balcony overlooking the garden and I couldn’t help but think that there was no place I would rather be than with him right then and there. Josh was the first one to say “I love you!”
I knew I was in love with Katelyn during our Nashville trip. I just remember exploring and enjoying the city effortlessly with her. We had so many smiles, laughs, and time basically didn’t matter during this trip. If we found something we spontaneously wanted to do, we did it. It led to one of the best trips ever and I knew then and there I wanted to continue to go on adventures with this special person. After lots of planning, a ring, a proposal, and a beautiful winter wedding, that dream came true.
The week before Memorial Day weekend in 2018, my youngest sister, Morgan, asked me if I wanted to have a girls day in Madison that Saturday to go shopping, enjoy a few drinks, and end at the comedy club for a show. Little did I know that Morgan was in on the proposal.
Soon enough, May 26th, 2018, rolled around and we went to the Memorial Union on campus to get a beer and ice cream before dinner. On the way downtown, I suggested to go to a restaurant that was closer to the comedy club, but Morgan was persistent about the Union.
As we were walking by the water, Morgan stopped abruptly and smiled awkwardly at me. I was oblivious to Josh walking towards us with a bouquet of flowers. Once I saw Josh, I was in shock, and Josh had sweat dripping down his face either from the heat or nerves 😉
We started walking together hand-in-hand and Josh was saying all the reasons why he loved me and wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I of course said, “YES!” We kissed and people cheered! It was picture perfect and something we will remember for the rest of their lives!
Glam but also simple. We want the art venue to speak for itself
Mainly black and gold with a little silver/sparkle. It was NYE after all 🙂
A Wisconsin Winter Wedding on NYE… is that a theme?!
It snowed over 5 inches the night of our wedding! Dreams do come true! Im not sure there are many brides that pray for snow on their wedding day.
For some reason I didn’t think I would see Josh right as the doors were opened for me to walk down the aisle. The church we got married in, which happened to be the same church that my parents got married in, has a very long aisle.
I was shocked to see him right when the doors swung open! I had to fight back the tears. Also, when we were walking out of the church right after our ceremony, it started snowing! I prayed for snow on our wedding day ever since we picked a NYE wedding in Wisconsin. We got over 5 inches that night!
Can I say everything?! We planned our wedding in seven months, so it was important for us to enjoy every second of the engagement and wedding planning. My mom was a huge help in helping out with the little details, and I could not have done it without her. One of the most fun parts about planning the wedding with Josh was going to Summerfest in Milwaukee, WI to listen to a band, Rhythm Kings, that he wanted to play for the wedding. It was so fun seeing them entertain the crowd and get everyone dancing. Josh sent them an e-mail on our way home to book them. We couldn’t have been happier with our band selection for our wedding!
