This Love Story Started While Working at The Cheesecake Factory

Bride’s Names, Age, Job and where she lives:

My name is Janine, I am a 29 year old teacher on Long Island.

Groom’s Name, Age, Job and where he lives:

Doug is 29 (turning 30 next month!!) and works for the electric company here on Long island.

How you two met:

We met through the cheesecake factory! We both worked at the restaurant together for five years or so before we started dating. When we first started working together, I used to BEG Doug to hang out with me outside of work but he always insisted that he didn’t hang out with people from work. After telling me no over and over again, he FINALLY agreed to take me to try my very first pumpkin beer. Our “hangout” quickly turned into what felt more like a date as we sat there for HOURS. After that, we would go to the movies, dinner and lotsss of late night drives together, until we both finally realized it was more than just a friendship….

What was your first impression of each other?:

I immediately loved Doug’s sense of humor and how he made me feel. Since the very first day that he trained me, he made me feel so comfortable and safe. I remember being SO nervous to start a new job and during one of my very first shifts he gave me his secret, “dressings cheat sheet” to help remember all the correct dressings to pack for to go orders. Such a small and simple gesture, but something that so accurately describes the type of person he is; always caring, thoughtful, and looking for ways to help people.

When did each of you know you were in love?:

I distinctly remember realizing that things were different with Doug when we went Christmas tree shopping for our first Christmas together. I had never chopped down my own tree before, but always thought it seemed so cool. Of course Doug had already done it and was so eager to take me. Together we picked out the most perfect tree (later we found out it was also the most spikiest tree) and took it back to his apartment to decorate. I remember wandering around the tree lot with him and thinking how special this was. I just LOVED the idea of getting to spend my time with him and doing things just the two of us. I still find myself relishing in the idea that I get to spend all my time with him. He truly is my most favorite person in the entire world.

How did the proposal happen?:

We both LOVE hiking. One of our favorite things to do together is to walk in the woods and just get lost with one another. It was my birthday and he asked me to request the weekend off for some special plans he made to celebrate. Little did I know his plans involved a trip to the AIRPORT. He flew me to Vermont, and booked us the most adorable bed and breakfast with a fireplace. He did plenty of research and found us the
highest mountain in Vermont to climb the next day. I was SICK and started crying ten minutes into the hike. I was so excited to be there and wanted so badly to make it to the top of the mountain but I was so stuffed and could barely breathe on the trail. I remember crying out of frustration and Doug pushing for us to just make it to the first peek (it all makes sense now hahah!) once we got up there I knew exactly what he had planned. He waited two other couples out until we had the peak to ourselves and then dropped to one knee and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him…… and then HE TOOK THE RING BACK! He told me the ring wasn’t insured yet and that I couldn’t wear it until we were safely down the mountain.. so down we ran. We got dinner to celebrate and began sharing the exciting news with friends and family.

Style of the wedding:

Since we both love the woods and the outdoors, we really wanted a rustic feel. We loved the high ceilings and the wood offered by our venue and booked the first venue we visited!

Maroon and Navy

If you had to pick a favorite moment of the day what would it be?:

I think my favorite part of our wedding day was our first look. I was so skeptical about doing a first look, but our wedding was so late in the day that it was the only choice that made sense for us if we wanted pictures in the daylight. Looking back, I am so happy we decided to do the first look privately. It was truly the only time that we got to spend just the two of us (aside from the photographers) but in all honesty, that
moment was so special it felt as though there was no one else in the world. Getting to kiss him for the first time on our wedding day is a happiness I will always remember and cherish.

What was the most fun part of the wedding to plan?:

I think planning all the little details. Doug was really involved and I loved that. We planned every piece of our wedding together which made everything even more special. I think planning and the process really taught us more about our relationship too. The whole process, that everyone warned us would be difficult and stressful, was actually easy and fun. We loved choosing our beautiful invites, choosing our venue, creating our centerpieces and finding ways to incorporate our friends into our day.
