A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Unica Forma From Our Intern’s Perspective

My name is Julia, and I am senior at Pickerington High School North. I am an outgoing, hardworking person, and I love working alongside and with others. I’ve always had a passion for hand lettering and have recently started a business by the name of Simple Sayings by Jules. I plan to attend Columbus College of Art and Design to further my academic career, and study graphic design and advertising.

How did you land the work/intern position with Unica Forma?

I am in a program called Service Learning at the high school I attend. During the class we go out to schools in the district and work with students and teachers as a student teacher. My teacher was talking with Charlie, Jordin’s husband, who was discussing their need for an intern for Unica Forma. My teacher suggested me and then told me to email Jordin; so I did, and we set up a phone call. She called me and discussed all the details, and within the next few weeks I started working.

What role do you play in their business? What does a typical work day look like?

I am the behind the scenes person who takes care of the details; such as packaging, shipping, sending thank you cards, reaching out to photographers, etc. I am here for about two hours and I usually start by throwing Pumba’s toy a
couple times, then I come to the office where all the prep stuff happens. Jordin explains the task I have for the day and I get started. Usually I package and prep invitation suites and get them ready to be sent the following day. Sometimes I cut envelope liners or assemble invitations in pockets in order to get them ready to be packaged up.

How long did it take for you to get comfortable doing the work, or are you even comfortable yet?

I started out and there was a lot of information, but I learned rather quickly where everything was and how it all worked. Jordin was very helpful when I had questions or needed a reminder of how to do something. Now I am comfortable with how to do mostly everything, and just have to ask about a few things every once in a while.

Do you like it? What’s your favorite and least favorite parts of the job?

YES! I love it! Working with Jordin is a blast and one of my favorite parts of the week. My favorite part is being able to talk with Jordin and catch each other up on life while we are working. My least favorite part would be working with the printer and trying to get the crazy thing to connect! (it does work, it’s just slow sometimes) But other than that I like doing just about everything I am tasked with doing!

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned while working for Unica Forma?

I have learned how run a full time business and how to start from the ground up. She has been an incredible example of how to take a dream and turn it into a reality. I have also learned more about myself and my future. In working with
Unica Forma, it made me want to pursue my art in college to one day have a career in graphic design.

How do you think this position will better your future?

Jordin has helped me to design a website for my own company, and through watching the way she runs her business, I think it will equip me for my future business or job. I have seen how she problem solves and works well with people. This has shown me an example of how I can be successful if I work hard and stick with doing what I love.
