Honeymoon Destinations That Are Cost Effective

Wedding planning can be so stressful that thinking about a honeymoon is the only thing that can keep you sane! But after all the time and money spent on your actual wedding, it can be hard to justify spending even more on a honeymoon! We’ve compiled a list of 5 incredible, budget friendly honeymoon vacations, without losing any of the luxury!

1.  Alaskan Cruise- $649.00 per person + airfare

Alaskan Cruise Cost Effective Honeymoon Idea

An Alaskan cruise is not probably not your first thought when it comes to a typical honeymoon, but count it out just yet! Cruising  in general is a pretty affordable option for a honeymoon, because everything you need is all in one place! You can eat, drink, and be entertained all on one ship! This particular cruise has 5 stops during the 7 day trip with a variety of activities on and off the boat for more of a laid back, casual type of vacation.

Length of time:
6 nights/ 7 days

Getting there:

Flight costs are not included in the cost of the cruise, but there are a lot of resources you can use to find affordable flights! You can pick from ports leaving out of Alaska, Seattle, or Vancouver, BC, which is nice for flexibility in picking flights too. Once you arrive it should be a short cab ride to the actual port to board the ship, and you’ll be off from there!

Most cruises offer, free food and drink on the boat, and this deal is no exceptions. Norwegian Cruise lines have included free unlimited open bar access, and free dining at specialty restaurants. Although not all the 15 dining options are free on the this boat, you’ll still have plenty of options to choose from if you’re trying to save your pennies!

Attractions and Activities:

This 7 day cruise stops at Alaska’s most scenic coastal areas. Theres a stop in the city of Skagway where you can learn how to dogsled with some adorable furry friends! Watching for humpback whales and sea lions are be truly a breathing experience! Enjoy some of the most delicious salmon with locals and just taking in some of the most beautiful views Alaska has to offer! Not all excursions are covered in your price, but the ship does give you credit towards the ones you are most interested in. Don’t forget about the free on board entertain, including a variety of nightclubs and shows that are continuously playing each night. This will be an event packed honeymoon for any type of couple.

What To Pack:

Because you will be spending a lot of time on or near the coast, its going to get cold. Of course depending on the time of the year you travel, it may be a bit warmer, but layers will be your best friend. A solid jacket with light layers, for the warmer months; and a warm coat for the winter months will do. Keep in mind the type of activities (on and off the boat) you will be partaking in and plan accordingly! Don’t forget to bring your camera as this part of the country will be something you’ll want to remember for years to come!

2. Riviera Maya, Mexico- $699 per person

Honeymoon in Rivera Maya, MexicoMexico is a beautiful country with such rich culture, but is often times looked down upon for being this scary, dangerous place. Every country has some rougher areas, but the Yucatan Peninsula is one of the safer areas in Mexico to travel to for anyone on booking their honeymoon!

Length of Time:
7 nights/ 8 days

Getting There:

This honeymoon vacation includes your flight from one of 12 different cities across the country! However there is about a hour drive from the airport to the resort, so keep in mind you will need to catch a bus or taxi to get you the rest of the way!

Food and Drink:

All meals and snacks are included in the package, which includes unlimited domestic drinks and select premium brands! You’ll have plenty of choices between the resorts 9 restaurants and 11 bars! You also have access to the fully stocked mini bar in your deluxe junior suite!

Attractions and Activities:

The first thing that comes to mind in Mexico is obviously the amount of time you two can spend lounging on the beach, but you don’t want to miss out on the other activities they offer! Everyday they offer some kind of group activity during the day (i.e. kayaking, snorkeling, sailing, and yoga), and different nightly entertainment. They also offer introductory classes if you want to try your hand in scuba diving! If your looking for something more slower paced, they have a spa on site that you can partake in for additional fees. Needless to say your days can be as busy or laid back as you want!

What to Pack:

First thing on the list os your passport! You wont be able to get on the plane without it! Your favorite beachwear will be ideal for this trip. Sunscreen, sunglasses, your favorite pair of flip flops are all essentials for a trip to Mexico! It wouldn’t hurt to bring an empty bottle of sunscreen as a decoy to keep any credit cards, cash or headphones safe and hidden. You don’t want to have to return from your honeymoon and replace your most valuable possessions.

3. Ireland (Dublin +Kilkenny) – $699 per person

Honeymoon off the coast of Dublin, IrelandIreland is a beautiful, lush country waiting to be explored! What was once one of the most expensive places to vacation, has become a fantastic option for honeymooners on a budget! The only items included in this package are the flight, rental car and lodging, but upgrades are available if interested!

Length of Time:
8 days

Getting There:

Like stated above, included in your overall price for this honeymoon option is airfare from one of 4 major cities and a rental economy car (manual) to drive around and in between cities! Everything should be taken care between those options to get around the country pretty easily. Do be prepared for an hour and a half drive from Kilkenny to Dublin, but enjoy the gorgeous countryside along the way!

Food and Drink:

Daily breakfast for half of the trip is included at the Bed and Breakfast you’ll be stay at in! You do also have the option to upgrade to include breakfast at the Kilkenny Hotel! Otherwise you are on your own to explore the best eats that Ireland has to offer!

Attractions and Activities:

Here is a quick list of things you can add to your upgrade list during your vacation

  • Admission to Cliffs of Moher in Galway
  • Admittance to Blarney Castle in Cork
  • Admittance to Bunratty Castle & Folk Park in Co. Clare
  • Admission to King John’s Castle in Limerick
  • Ring of Kerry Tour in Co. Kerry
  • Dublin and Kilkenny have so much to offer beyond this list. Don’t forget that you have access to a rental car, which truly gives you the freedom to go where ever your heart desires!

What to Pack:

In the summer months, Ireland still doesn’t tend to get much higher than low 70’s so, dress according to the season. Bring a good pair of shoes and a jacket in the chance that you want to take a trip to the coastal cliffs to do some exploring! Don’t forget to bring your adapter for the european plugs if you ever want to charge your phone!

4. Phuket, Thailand- $1,050 per person

Honeymoon in Phuket, ThailandThailand is such a great destination for a honeymoon because not only is it such a stunning place to be with your new partner, but its so affordable! You can really save on your basic necessities like lodging and food, without losing any value to your trip! It’s a beach bums paradise that you should definitely consider looking into!

Length of Time:
9 days

Getting there:

This deal includes round trip flights out of New York or Los Angeles. However, is you search deep enough through the internet you can find some really reliable discount sites to help you if you aren’t in one of those two cities! There are websites like skyscanner.com that scan through millions of flights to find the cheapest options that some of the more well known companies, like Expedia or Kayak can miss! You can also search places like Groupon (which is where I found this current deal) or Hitlist for package deals that can take the stress out of trying to plan a vacation all on your own. A shuttle to and from the airport is included in this deal too!

Not much food and drink is included in this deal, other than a daily breakfast at your hotel. In reality, if you are going to vacation in such a unique place, you should venture out into the local markets and try real thai food!

Attractions and Activities:

The package states there are tours available with English speaking guides, but none of which are included in the package price. Listed below are some of the options given that you can add on at any time.

  • Khaosok Jungle Discovery hiking and canoeing trip on day 3 ($135 per person; minimum 2 participants)
  • Phuket Fantasea show with dinner on day 3 ($68 per person)
  • The Hidden Phuket tour with dinner on day 3 ($80 per person; minimum 2 participants)
  • Coral Island trip by speedboat with lunch on day 3 ($52 per person)
  • Jungle trekking and nature walk on day 3 ($75 per person)
  • Phang Nga Bay by speedboat with lunch on day 3 ($80 per person)
  • Four-island trip by speedboat with lunch on day 7 ($45 per person)
  • Krabi Rainforest Discovery tour with lunch on day 7 ($45 per person)
  • Khao Sok nature tour with lunch on day 7 ($80 per person)

However, there are a bunch of other options if those guided tours dont interest you. Thailand features attractions like the Open Park Zoo where you can interact with some of the animals, or go on a elephant trek! There are some gorgeous temples and museums that you can explore too! Do your research and I have no doubt you’ll find an endless amount to do!

What To Pack:

No matter where you go in Thailand, its going to be hot and humid. Light and comfortable clothes will be your best friend! Don’t forget to bring plenty of sunscreen and swimwear for this tropical vacation. Be aware monsoon season is from June to October, and it can rain a lot. Bring any leisurely items like book, magazines, or anything else you like to do on vacation!

Areas of Concern:

Thailand is generally pretty safe, but always be aware of your surroundings. Its recommended that you use cash as your form of payment, more so than a credit card to avoid any possible scams. Also make sure you are up to date on your vaccinations when traveling to Thailand. There are some food borne illnesses like Typhoid and Hepatitis A that you want to make sure you are covered for!

5. Dominican Tree House Village- $3,400

Honeymoon in Dominican Treehouse Village

The Dominican Tree House Village is such a unique find, I had to add it to the ideal honeymoon list! Located in the Dominican Republic,  the two of you can spend a week relaxing in a tropical paradise. Surrounded by the Caribbean jungle, you will truly have the chance to disconnect from the hustle of your busy life! You’ll get to stay in treetop cabin, not far from the secluded beaches and waterfalls! They have a plethora of activities available ranging from zip-lining, cliff jumping and off roading, to something a little more slower paced, like whale watching, snorkeling and horseback riding! You’ll have a chance to interact with the friendly locals on site that can help you with anything to make your trip spectacular, and learn about their incredible culture and country!

Length of time:
6 nights, 7 Days

Getting there:

Flights are about the only thing not included in this all inclusive package! DR has two main airports, and no matter which you arrive in, it will be a little bit of a trek to get to the resort. From Santo Domingo, you would be looking at a 2.5 hour drive, which may be a lot for some people; but coming from Samana El Catey its barely over a hour! However, roundtrip ground transfers are included in your package, so not  extra fees there! Just keep this little detail in mind while booking your flights!

Food and Drink:

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all taken care of within their restaurants! Water, soda and their local Rum Jungle Juice is also included free! Of course anything else consumed outside of their establishment will be on you.

Attractions and Activities:

This is probably the best part of the Dominican Treehouse Village; there is so much to do! Here is a quick list I pulled from their website that is all included free in your honeymoon package

  • National Park, Bird Observing, Bacardi Island Boat Tour with Cave Exploration
  • Horseback Ride to top-10 waterfall in the Caribbean, Las Terrenas Beach, Italian Gelato shop
  • Zip-Line Course Access (Unlimited)
  • Off roading tour to one of the world’s top 10 beaches
  • Swimming pool
  • Yoga Dome + Onsite Yoga instruction (matts provided)
  • Rope-Swing Waterfall Experience
  • Casa Typica Tour
  • Free use of Beach Cruiser Bikes’

Not to mention you have unlimited access to all of these activities and MORE!

What to Pack:

Dominican Republic is in the Caribbean, so needless to say, this is not a trip to sport your new Christmas sweater! Light, airy, breathable clothing will be your best because nothing is worse than feeling stuck to your clothing in humidity! You’ll need all your key pieces for the beach like bathing suits, cover ups, and flip flops. You may also want to include things like sunglasses and hats for the days you get too much sun. And of course don’t forget to bring sunscreen and bug spray! Although the company says the resort is virtually mosquito free, it might make you feel better to have it on hand. Pick up a new must-read for the plane ride, or download a new podcast for the days you want to lounge around on the beach.

Areas of Concern:

Being in a different country can be scary for some, but don’t let your fear of the unknown hold you back from what could be an incredible experience! Not only are you far from city life, but the company assures you the grounds are nothing but safe! Also keep in mind you are going to spend time in the jungle, so if you aren’t one who enjoys nature, and everything that comes with it, this may not be the trip for you.
